The Intensive English Programme (IEP) is a language proficiency course designed for international students who have not met the English language competency requirements set by UNITEN. It is a platform to enhance their English language proficiency as a requirement for their respective academic programmes. Students who have not met the English Language competency requirement for UNITEN academic programmes are required to take this course. At the end of the course, students are required to sit for the MALAYSIAN UNIVERSITY ENGLISH TEST (MUET) examination and achieve the required band set by UNITEN.
Intake for the IEP is done three (3) times a year, namely in January, July, and October. The course is conducted every day for 10 weeks and runs from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The course is designed to prepare students for the MUET examination. Students will be registered for six different subjects: Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading. In class, students are given the necessary MUET language skills to enable them to reach the acceptable functional level required for academic success at UNITEN. Classes are small, with a maximum capacity of 25 students per class, to generate a conducive learning environment in which students are expected to see maximum results.
On the 11th week, students will sit for an official MUET examination. It is important to note that the IEP programme is designed as a preparatory class for students to learn the format, get comprehensive help on MUET-based practise sets, and get tips for sitting the MUET test. Students who are unable to pass the MUET test during week 11 must stay for another semester and pay the full IEP fees again.
Therefore, before coming and travelling to UNITEN, students are encouraged to put in extra effort to prepare and strengthen their own English competency. Students who are weak in English are advised to take beginner and intermediate proficiency classes before coming to UNITEN, so they can join and keep up with the IEP programme. Based on the designed level, Intensive English Programme (IEP) is unable to cater, and not recommended, for students with basic or zero English competency.
