The Institute of Energy Policy and Research (IEPRe) was established in July 2008 as part of UNITEN’s strategic transformation to spearhead research and consultancy activities in energy research. To lend further strength to IEPRe research, the Chair in Energy Economics of Energy Commission at UNITEN has been established in 2010. The establishment of the Chair in Energy Economics of Energy Commission at UNITEN is supported by the Energy Commission and Tenaga Nasional Berhad.
THE CHAIR HOLDER
The renowned expert holding the Chair will be appointed for a minimum of 2-year term with the main function as an International Advisor for the Institute of Energy Policy and Research (IEPRe), UNITEN. The chair holder is responsible to spearhead research in energy areas which are highly pertinent in the industry and require immediate analyses for the country to make the best economic decisions on energy matters. The appointment of the Chair would strengthen the organization’s research capacity and capability towards achieving research excellence in the area of energy economics.
Professor Dr. Ken Koyama
Chair Holder (7 December 2015 – Present)
Professor Dr. Ken Koyama is known for his expertise in energy security issues and the geopolitics of energy; and analysis for the global energy market and policy issues with emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region. His research in the area of energy economics and the world oil and natural gas market has been published extensively in national and international journals and books. Professor Dr. Ken Koyama has also been featured in numerous broadcasts including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and National Public Radio (NPR). He is currently the Chief Economist and Managing Director at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ). He also takes a position of Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy, the University of Tokyo, and Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Innovative Research at Tokyo Institute of Technology. He has served as a member of energy policy related advisory councils and committees of the Japanese government on many occasion. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board of Energy Academy Europe, Netherland. He was awarded the BrandLaureate’s “Brand Personality Award” in 2016.
Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri (in memoriam)
Chair Holder (2010 - 2013)
Dr. R.K. Pachauri was an internationally recognised leader on environmental and energy issues and policy dimension. He was the former CEO of The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI) in New Delhi, India that engaged in the research and development of solutions to global problems in the fields of energy, environment and current patterns of development. He was also the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s leading intergovernmental organization for the assessment of climate change. Dr. Pachauri, who served voluntarily, was elected Chairman in 2002 and reflected by acclamation in 2008. Dr. Pachauri was an economist and industrial engineer by training and held numerous academic posts in addition to his work with TERI and the IPCC. He also won numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which he led from 2008 to 2015. He passed away on 13 February 2020
