The Challenges to Overcome Global Energy Trilemma and Its Implication to Malaysia

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) has organised a talk entitled The Challenges to Overcome Global Energy Trilemma and Its Implication to Malaysia on 12th November 2019.  The talk was given by Professor Dr. Ken Koyama, the Chair in Energy Economics of Energy Commission at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN).

The talk highlighted several points especially on energy security, environment protection and economic growth (as well as economic efficiency) which constitutes “3Es” or energy trilemma. In addition, these three elements also often stands in trade-off relations.  As energy demand is expected to increase substantially driven by the growth in Asia, the challenges to address global energy trilemma is becoming increasingly complicated and difficult. Thus, this session was trying to highlight the prospects and challenges of global energy trilemma, based on the latest IEEJ’s long term outlook “IEEJ Outlook 2020”, as well as to discuss the key issues of the options to overcome the challenges in a bid to examine its implication to Malaysia. 

The talk was attended by about 95 participants from Energy Commission, SEDA, TNB, MGA, Gas Malaysia Berhad, PETRONAS, PEMANDU, UNITEN staffs, Post-Doctoral and students mainly from College of Energy Economics and Social Sciences (CES). The two hours period indeed has provide a platform for participants to with prominent energy economist, Professor Dr. Ken Koyama.
