UNITEN hosted the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) Workshop: Realizing Green Hydrogen Towards 2030

6 May 2026 - Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) hosted the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) Workshop: Realizing Green Hydrogen Towards 2030 on 6 May 2026, a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating the development of Malaysia’s hydrogen ecosystem.
The workshop, held at Le Méridien Putrajaya, brought together key stakeholders from the government, industry, and academia to strengthen cross-sector collaboration and facilitate knowledge exchange in line with the national clean energy transition.
Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Deputy Secretary-General (Technology Development), Puan Norsham Abdul Latip, who officiated the event, highlighted the necessity of a unified national approach to ensure Malaysia remains competitive in the global energy market.
“The development of a robust hydrogen economy requires strong cross-sector synergy. We must integrate academic research, agile policy formulation, and industrial implementation to build a sustainable future for the nation,” she said.
Meanwhile, UNITEN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ir. Dr. Khairul Salleh Mohamed Sahari, emphasized that the university’s role extends beyond education, positioning itself as a catalyst for high-impact technological innovation.
“Strategic partnerships between policymakers, industry leaders, and academia are the linchpin in enabling a scalable hydrogen ecosystem. UNITEN remains committed to driving this transition by developing future-ready talent and providing the research expertise needed for a low-carbon economy,” he added.

Dr. Ng Sing Muk from Sarawak Energy Berhad, who shared insights on green hydrogen as a viable electrification solution and Sarawak’s potential as a regional green energy hub.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rozan Mohamad Yunus from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, who presented advancements in electrolyser technologies for hydrogen production systems.
The session was moderated by Prof. Dato’ ChM. Dr. Mohammad Bin Kassim from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, who facilitated structured discussions on policy alignment, industrial readiness, and enabling conditions for hydrogen technology deployment.
