Institute of Energy Policy and Research (IEPRe)

Established in 2009, the Institute of Energy Policy and Research (IEPRe) is UNITEN’s specialised research institute for energy policy, economics, regulation and sustainability. The institute supports Malaysia’s evolving energy landscape and the wider Asia-Pacific energy transition by connecting technical energy research with policy, financial and socio-economic analysis.

IEPRe’s work covers six core areas: Energy Economics, Energy Security, Energy Policy, Energy and Environment, Energy and Social Sustainability, and the Energy Supply Industry. Its expertise includes fuel and electricity market analysis, regulatory and tariff design, energy transition planning, climate and sustainability studies, financial modelling, and strategic policy advisory.

A key strength of IEPRe is its Energy Modelling and Simulation Lab, which integrates energy, economy and environment modelling through tools such as Computable General Equilibrium analysis, EnergyPLAN, MATLAB, input-output modelling and IAEA frameworks. Through research, consultancy, policy roundtables, international collaboration and talent development, IEPRe supports evidence-based decision-making for government, regulators, utilities, industry, academia and regional stakeholders.
