Established in 2012, the Institute of Sustainable Energy (ISE) is UNITEN’s first research institute recognised as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. Based at the National Energy Centre, UNITEN Putrajaya Campus, ISE advances renewable energy research, development and innovation in support of Malaysia’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
Its research spans in the areas of biofuels and biomass conversion, biohydrogen production, fuel cell technologies, hybrid solar and wind systems, micro- and mini-hydro, fire protection, ocean energy, biodiesel catalysts, biogas from waste materials, solid biofuel briquettes produced from oil palm waste and combustion of alternative fuels
A key strength of ISE is its ability to translate laboratory research into practical solutions. Through strategic collaboration with industry partners, including Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the institute has supported initiatives such as the campus biodiesel programme using waste cooking oil. These efforts position ISE as a leading platform for renewable technology development, circular economy solutions and applied research that delivers value to industry, society and the environment.
